We originally started this because I wanted to document, you know, how the progression of my business has expanded, how I've moved into different areas. So, at the beginning of the week I launched a new personal project with a friend of mine called Luke called "OxyBuild Challenge."

That we've mentioned a couple of times that you weren't able to say exactly what it is and now you can. So what we've decided to do is to dedicate this whole episode to OxyBuild Challenge.

Yeah. So just kind of a bit before that, when I'd mentioned this secret project, I had a couple of people and my friends that kind of watch it and keep tabs on it. And they were like, "ooh what's your secret project?" And obviously, I couldn't really say anything because I didn't want to ruin it or if it didn't become as, didn't come to fruition of how I wanted it to.

Well yeah, if you had any major hurdles that prevented you from launching.

Yeah. So it was actually quite a scary but exciting moment. So just to give you a quick overview; OxyBuild Challenge is a challenge website where you can compete or kind of challenge I guess, against other people and also yourself to become a better developer, a better designer using Oxygen Builder. So we create these realistic client briefs that you can then participate in. So it will normally be you know, 'a Electricians website that needs to use this specific colour. It needs to have this kind of basic functionality and maybe some contact details,' and the rest is up to you. And there'll be kind of as accurate to client briefs as we can get. I obviously have my own clients, so I know what type of things clients ask, and things like that. And it's basically for people that are getting into web design but want to practise but don't have any idea of where to look.

Or any clients at that time who are going to give them a proper brief.

Exactly. So obviously, I am at a point where I have enough client work that I can just get on with it. But I also enjoy just building stuff that I think of, but I only can do that now because of the experience that I've gained from client work and learning and expanding. But for someone that's new in the industry, it's very daunting because you're kind of like, "I need to get clients, but to get clients I need a portfolio, but to practise I need clients," and it's like a, it's a loop. So we created this to kind of help people like that, and also the people that want to just be creative and expand their skills. So I'm always trying to better myself and get better skills. And for people that are, you know, want to take a break from the client work, and they just want to see what they can come up with that, with very loose guidelines and things like that. And it became a lot bigger than what we originally planned.

So before we get into that, the way that people join is that they would just register on the site; they would look at the current challenge; and if they wanted to enter; they go away; create whatever it is the brief is asking them to do; and then submit it. And then anybody else who's registered can then vote on which of the projects, or which of the...

Well, we encourage people to vote on all of the entries if they can. And obviously there are going to be better ones and worse but we...

So, a vote is not just "I like this." It's star rating, isn't it?

Yeah so we've got five different criteria, and you're rated based on that. So kind of the design; the build quality; the responsiveness; how closely you match the brief; and also creativity, you know how creative are you with your design? You know, if you've done a very basic block kind of design, which, you know, it's just adding a couple of divs and a couple of headings, it's not going to be as creative as someone that's gone out there and actually thought about the idea and also just experimented. That's another thing, it's just experimenting.

Yeah, exactly. And it gives people a reason to do it.

And if you get it wrong, it doesn't really matter because it's just a challenge. And it's not a real life project that you're going to lose money on.

And in the votes, you're able to leave feedback. So this is where I'm hoping that the kind of the better people that are more experienced are going to step in and give their feedback and their honest opinion.

So, that is a problem though that you came across, wasn't it? With the fact that there are certain names within the Oxygen builder community that are very well known. And so if anyone sees that name, they're going to automatically give a different vote to how they might do if they didn't know that.

Yeah. So the way that we've done it is every single entry, while the challenge is active, is anonymous. So when you're looking at someone's entry, it doesn't tell you who it is. It just says 'anonymous' and it gives, like a basic profile picture, like a general one. And then everyone that votes, we hide them until the voting is finished.

So the person who has the entry can't see any of the votes.

They don't know how they're doing until the challenge is finished.

And anyone who's voting doesn't see anyone else's vote, so they can't be influenced with other people's decisions.

The main idea was we don't want people to look at an entry and go, "oh, I know this person, I'm going to vote for my friend and give them a good score." Obviously, it's very difficult to police that, if people are sending links to each other in private message, very hard to obviously police that. But it stops people that know of people in the community and automatically give them a higher score, for example, because they're popular.

But then also we don't want other people's votes to opinionate that, like you said. So if you see a well known person giving it a low score, you might think, "oh, actually yeah, he's given it a low score, I'm going to give it a low score."

And that will influence the votes. And, so yeah, like I said, you know, we want the more experienced people to come through and give their solid feedback because it's the new people that we want to empower to carry on our industry and make sure that we have it so that they don't feel scared and run off. Because you can come across communities where the more experienced people get bored and tired of the very basic questions. If it wasn't for people answering the basic questions, you would never have...

Exactly. So I try and, you know, I try and answer as many of the newb questions I can, even if if I've replied it 100 times, because I was in this situation like that before, and I had people that were kind enough to comment and reply to me.

And that's got you to where you are now.

So before we go any further, I think we should talk a little bit more about the technology and everything behind it. I think we should mention the fact that this isn't just your project.

Yes, so this is a friend. The way it came about was a guy called Luke, who is a guy in one of, in the discord server that I'm in, the Oxygen discord. And he said, "hey guys, got an idea, a challenge site." And I thought, "that's quite interesting." I thought, I had loads of ideas just right off just that sentence. So I messaged him privately and said, "hey, I love the idea of the challenge site," and it kind of went from there really. We kind of both had the same type of vision. We both were happy to do it as a community project. So we don't earn anything. It's not monetized in any way. We have affiliate links, which if people want to click on them and use them, they can, but you know, if they don't we don't mind. We have a donation portal where people can buy us coffee, and that's really the only way we've monetized the site. And it was never for earning, it was more of seeing what we could come up with and seeing what skills we can have and gain.

However, there are costs involved in having this site, so you do in some way have to cover those costs?

Yes, exactly. So we kind of...

And that's something you're going to look at in the future isn't it?

So yeah, we're going to see if we can just cover the costs, we're not looking to make a massive profit.

Yeah. But yeah, we're not looking to make a massive profit, we just want to cover our costs, because for me and Luke the experience and the skills that we've gained from this project alone is probably priceless. Without having that project, I wouldn't have learned a lot of the stuff that I've learnt.

So talk us through how you divvied up the work, because there's quite a lot of work involved.

.com. There we go. So how did you work out who was going to do what?

So we quickly established that I was a better developer and I knew PHP and Java script a lot better than Luke did. And at the same time, Luke enjoyed and was also good at design. So we decided that I would take all the development stuff, so everything that's the back end, or doing all the logic, and Luke would make it look pretty on the front end. And I think without Luke and without me, the website wouldn't be, obviously. But if I built the back end and did all the logic without putting it on the front end, the code is useless. And without Luke, you know, having the code in the back end, the design doesn't work.

You're right. The functionality and the user interface are so closely linked together to either make or break a site.

[00:11:24.620] - Taylor
And they need to be done by separate people, really. I always think that you're always going to be better in one or the other. Whenever in web development, you're always going to lean further to one side, whether or not you enjoy just being more creative, or you enjoy seeing what you can build and be more techie, I guess, and developer focused. And so that's why I think this relationship between us work, because I would always just say, "can you add this and design this?" I would just say, "design this page." I'd give him literally the title, and he would go and build the page. I would then come in after he's designed it, and link everything up and connect it. And I think that really worked because you're not switching between trying to think about how the design is going to look and then switching about how it's actually going to function. And so it worked really well. And I really enjoyed it because I prefer development. I still enjoy building and designing sites as well, but I take a lot more higher interest and my brain enjoys it more, and Luke's the opposite, so it works really well.

It's coming back to this puzzle thing, isn't it? You and I are similar in that respect where we enjoy puzzles and something that is... I mean, for me as a magician, I come across things that are impossible and try and figure out how they can be done. And it's a bit like that with coding, where maybe something that you've never done or other people have never done, you have to come up with a way that it's going to work by using your knowledge and code to make it happen.

So let's move on to the site. I think maybe if you, I know you're go into this in more detail on the actual site itself in the future. So let's pick maybe three main challenges or things that you weren't sure how they were going to happen, and they came out really well or maybe something that you tried and abandoned.

So, I mean to start off I'll give you kind of the main kind of features. This website is pretty much entirely built custom with Oxygen and a couple of helper plug-ins. So when I say 'helper plug-ins,' I mean plug-ins that just add basic functionality, which you can extend massively. So I'm talking about obviously Oxygen itself. I'm talking about advanced custom field, which is it literally just adds fields, so like text inputs and number inputs and image fields and things like that. And then an extended version of that which adds kind of helper plug-in, helper hooks and filters, which are ways you can interact with the code at certain points in the process for example when you submit a form. So you can hook in before the data goes into the database, or after it's been submitted, things like that. We then hooked in with "Fluent Forms" and "Fluent CRM." Shout out to Jewel, who is the CEO, who is really cool and has helped me a lot.

We are a big fan, actually, of Fluent stuff, because there's three, there's four products of theirs that we use a lot. So there's Fluent Forms we use a lot, Fluent CRM we both started using recently. There is "Fluent SMTP," which is a new product for them, which is something that they've recently bought out, which is free, so if you need to send emails from your website, that's the plug-in you need: Fluent SMTP. And there's "Ninja Tables."

They're the main kind of poster plug-ins. They've also got lots of others, like Amazon things and like subscription ones, but they're the main.

They're the ones we've got experience with and love.

And yeah, I mean, throughout the whole project, which took about a month in total between two of us, I was constantly asking him questions, you know, "how do I do this?" In, kind of, hooking into their API and things like that.

And I actually ended up finding out an issue with one of the documentation, which if I hadn't have asked him, I would have been going around in circles for...

Because it just had been documented wrong, and I was like, "how does this match up when they're both the same type of text?" So yeah. So thank you to Jewel, who yeah, he probably was very confused because I kept on just asking him really complex things with, out of context, because I didn't want to, like, release.

I think he's a bit like you. I think he likes people who push his technologies.

Because he knows that if you have pushed it in a way that maybe it wasn't originally designed for, then other people are going to do the same, and therefore he will end up with more people purchasing and using his products.

Yeah, exactly. But yeah, he was a great help.

But it was different because me and Jewel are, kind of like friends, and we talk in kind of private message, whereas I could have reached out to their actual support system.

And it's good that someone in his position, as the owner of the company, actually knows enough information to be able to answer your questions. Or if he doesn't, he's got the team behind him to ask.

So yeah, kind of going back to that, is all of the stuff is pretty much custom built. I wrote all of the functions and scripts myself from pretty much scratch. Didn't have too much to go on, really, apart from just my past experience and what I found on the internet.

Yeah, so some of the features that are standout would be, we created an award system which is very smart because it allows us to add awards to people's accounts dynamically. So if you...

So this is 'gamifying' the system, isn't it? Making it into something fun that people can receive a reward for? In this case, it's a digital award.

We then had a notification system, so that was basically adding a little notification banner to top of your profile page where we can give you information that is either relevant to you, so for example saying, "Congratulations, you won an award," or maybe "Congratulations you're winner," or you know, "thank you for signing up," for example, anything that we want to notify you about really.

And can you use that for you know, notifications of maintenance for example?

Exactly. We can tell people that there's maintenance going on, or anything we just want to let people know, either in bulk or on a per person basis. So, for example, we have a report system where it's just a form where you can report either person, an entry or anything like that. And we can then obviously add a notification to your account to say, you know, "look you have a warning, anything more, and you'll be banned," and it gives us a way to get in contact with them kind of on a non...

And these notifications stay visible until they effectively close them down so that...

Yeah. So this was kind of the custom part where I made it so that you could close and remove the notification without having to refresh the page and the numbers all linked up. So we had like a little counter in the top corner of your screen that shows you how many notifications you had and actually, because of Jonathan from "Permaslug," I actually added in a 'clear all notifications' button, which he was very thankful for.

So, yeah, that was the first kind of feature that I was impressed with, well, happy with, that I managed to get working.

Then we have the 'custom invite' referral system. So we wanted a way or a reason for people to invite their friends. So we created an invite system, like a referral system. And what, all this does is you have a link that you can copy from your dashboard, and you can send that to your friends, and that just has your username in the URL as a parameter. What I can then do is when someone registers using that URL, I can take that user name that you've passed in, and I can add a referred, not only a 'referred award' to your account so when you've signed up, but also I can have, give the award to the person who referred you and say that how many people they've invited, so whether that be 1, 5, 10, 15, 20, whatever. You can get awards for how many people you invited.

How many people have signed up not invited? You can invite hundreds. But it's people who have actually signed up right?

Yes. So there's people who've signed up with your link rather than the people you've invited because you could invite, you could send out 100 invites, 20 of them will sign up, and therefore you've got 20.

And so this is kind of where the 'clear all notifications'. Every time someone signs up with your code, we send you a notification just to let you know, because, you know, you might be curious to see who signed up, whether that be a friend or someone on the internet, you just posted it in a forum, for example. And Jonathan, you know, he has nearly 5000 subscribers on YouTube. So he has very big audience. And he, in the first 12 hours, hit the max awards, which was 'invited 50 builders,' which is what we call kind of people that are, have an account on the website.

So we should say that Jonathan, Permaslug, he did a video for his YouTube channel all about OxyBuild Challenge, and he sort of introduced it to the community.

Yeah. So I reached out to him and said, you know, "look, we've got this project." And this was when I first introduced him. And funny enough, he actually had the same idea, he just hadn't got around to doing it. And he said, "I'm glad you guys are the ones that did it." And he absolutely loved the idea. He loved the concept. He loved all of the little things we'd added, the little features. And I said, "would you be interested in sponsoring it?" And what sponsor means is that instead of just getting a digital award for winning, we offered the winner a prize. So, Jonathan...

Yes. So this is sponsoring one challenge, and the sponsor gives an award or a prize of their choice. So Jonathan offered $150 to any Oxy add on.

But yeah, so this was something Jonathan decided that he wanted to do, which I respect for, and I appreciate, because it brings a bit of more excitement to the project or the challenge, at least. So yeah. And then we've got a couple of other people that have actually reached out to us and say, "we'd love to sponsor."

Which is lovely, isn't it? It's nice that they came on to the site, saw that you were doing sponsorships, and they've now decided they would like to sponsor. And what we'll do is when we have a new challenge on the OxyBuild Challenge, we will attempt to remember and let you know on this channel that there's a new challenge, and we'll be able to thank the sponsor at the same time, if there is one.

So, yeah, that was basically the idea. There's a couple of other things that we've built in, you know, the voting system, which each vote is attached. Creating an average votes for each entry, so you can see overall based on all the votes, what you kind of got in total.

And that's quite nice if you enter more than one challenge, you can see if your average votes are going up, to see if you are actually improving.

Yeah. And then the kind of last thing is the 'calculate winner.' So this is a function that I wrote with took every single person's entry, every single vote attached to the entry, and calculated who the winner was.

And we're not going to explain how that works because we don't want anybody to sort of game it. It's a bit like Google's search engine. They never explain how they rank people in the search engine results. And so, you know, Taylor has decided, very wisely in my opinion, not to explain anything about how the winner is worked out. So it can't be abused, basically.

Yeah. And that's mainly the kind of custom things that I built all from scratch. Some people just install a plug-in to do it, and we probably could have found plug-ins, but I wanted for my own sake, for, you know, my own skill, and also because I wanted control over what was happening and what I was able to do. You know plug-ins can only do so much because they're a blanket, they're built for a blanket purpose rather than very specific and niche functionality.

So yeah. And then the last thing would be I guess, when someone gets an award or someone enters a challenge, we add a tag to them in the CRM, which just send them an email, depending what it is. So if they've registered, if they got an award, if they're a winner, when the challenge has been completed. And kind of worked. It's kind of, yeah, basically yeah, you get email notifications as well.

It's great. It's a really good system. If you are thinking about looking into the Oxygen builder on the WordPress platform, this could be a very good way for you to learn and and better your skills if you like. So I highly recommend going and registering, even if you just want to start out by reviewing and voting on other people's entries.

Yeah, a lot of people said, you know like, "I don't have the time," because they're well into their career. They have enough work so they don't need it. They don't have the time, which is understandable, and it's a bit too much work for them. So I'm going to...

But they did say, "I'd love to use it as just a way of inspiration and looking at what people just come up with," because when you look at a challenge and the brief, you may completely interpret in one way, but someone interprets it in a different way and you go, "oh I didn't think about that approach," and then you can use that in your own projects or in client work. So the person who's been doing the transcriptions has been doing a great job. And we are nearly, nearly all up to date.
