And welcome to "This Week With Taylor and Gordon," a weekly podcast and vidcast where we talk about things that have affected our businesses as self-employed people during the last seven days. And we've got a little guest with us today. Yeah, Marty's come to join us. I don't know how long he'll be there, but at the moment he's going to sit there and watch. So hello, how are you doing?

Very good thank you. And this week is an interesting week. We've got two topics to talk about. Do you want to go first or second?

Okay. So this is quite an important subject that affects a lot of people, and I shall let Taylor explain all about it.

So I suffer from Crohn's disease. And recently, in the past couple of weeks, I've started to kind of feel I guess more ill again, in terms of you kind of go through what's called like a flare and remission. So I'm kind of slowly going back into a flare. And so I was put on medication again by my doctor. So this week has mainly just been a week of recovering and kind of just trying to get myself back to full speed, I guess.

And just so that people who don't know, understand, can you just very briefly explain what Crohn's is and how it affects you?

[00:01:42.040] - Taylor
So Crohn's is an inflammatory bowel disease. It can affect you in lots of different ways. There are things like tiredness and fatigue, bowl or stool movements things like that, and just overall discomfort and pain really. So yeah, day to day life can be sometimes challenging. I can still move and walk normally, but normally you just don't have much energy to get up and do things or have the motivation yourself to do things.

And it's surprising how many people actually suffer from this. It is quite debilitating, because if you get this fatigue, you just feel like doing absolutely nothing and going to bed and then you can't sleep because you've got this pain in your stomach and then you need to go to the toilet all the time. And it's just, it takes focus off anything that you actually need to do and you have to concentrate on your disease, your illness and make sure that you're doing everything you can to make yourself feel better.

Yeah.

And that is normally a case of, you know, speaking to your specialist and having them decide what the next step is.

You know, and it could go all the way to the other side where you need, you know, surgery. And so it's a really difficult thing to live with. And I'm really proud of Taylor, actually, because he has had this since he was about 14, 13?

No I had it, well I got diagnosed when I was 18, 17 or something.

16, 17, something like that. Around GCSE time I got diagnosed.

That's right, I remember now. And he's not really let it affect him. He just gets on with it. He doesn't moan, he doesn't complain. He just says, you know, "this is what I have, this is what I have to get through, and I'll get on with stuff as soon as I can." And it is the reason why, every now and then we say, "there won't be an episode this week." It's mainly because Taylor's not feeling great. You know, he doesn't feel up to, or he's not able to, come and talk on the podcast and vidcast. So if we have an episode in the future where we're not able to do it, that's probably the reason. That's about all we need to say. Is there anything else you want to add?

No, I think that's everything. I mean, interesting that whenever I mention it, a lot of people go, "oh, I know someone that has it." Which kind of goes to show how many people do kind of have it in.

Well, there's lots of people that I know, lots of famous people. Dynamo has it. He quite famously got very ill a little while ago and sort of, he ballooned a bit, he was quite big. But he's managing it. Someone that is involved in the Pantomime that I'm doing, she has it. Actually has the same specialist as Taylor. But there's lots of people who have it. And it's one of these hidden illnesses. You can't tell just by looking at people that they have it, which means that when you use your radar key to use the...

Accessible toilet.

Disabled toilets, accessible toilets. You get funny looks because you look perfectly fine, but obviously he's not. And he needs that key to be able to get into the toilet because he needs the toilet urgently, and you get some funny looks. So next time you see someone using an accessible toilet who looks fine, then just understand that they may have one of these hidden invisible diseases that you can't actually see from just looking at someone.

Thank you, Taylor. Thank you for sharing that anyway. So this week for me, has been taken up with a couple of things; SCD and SDC. Very confusing that they are so similar. So we'll do SCD first. So this is the Sanderstead Community Day. So every year, every year apart from last year, around this sort of time, we have an event in our local park, with lots of local business owners who set up stalls. We have the scouting, the Scouts from the local area come and join us. We have a stage normally, and we have entertainment that goes on all day. And about four years ago, I think that's about right. About four years ago, I got asked if I would be involved with the entertainment part of it. And funnily enough, it's sort of run by a teacher of yours from secondary school.

Who I don't believe teaches anymore.

No.

I don't think she's a teacher anymore. But she contacted me because she knew I was an entertainer and wanted to know if I could do some entertainment and then said, you know, "we don't really have anyone who's sort of MCing the day. Would that be something you'd like to do?" And it's like, "um... yeah, okay, I'll do that." So this isn't actually a paid job for me. It's something I do for two reasons. I do it for fun, because it's a lot of hard work. You've seen me do it. It's a lot of work. It's a whole day of keeping on top of things and making sure everything runs to time and dealing with any problems that come up. So it's a lot of hard work, but it is fun. And it also means that I can get my face out there, and I'm using it for my own publicity if you like. So when I do my own show, I give out lots of my own cards and I get shows from that. So it's a way of me choosing and picking what events I want to do where maybe I'm not being paid and I don't do any other than this one. But this is because it's a local event, and it's somebody who's involved that, you know, was a teacher of Taylor's, and lots of other reasons. So that's the reason I do it. And that's coming up very soon, in a couple of weeks. In fact, a week, 25th, yeah next week. I've been working very hard on that because we're not having a stage this year. It was a very late notice decision to decide to go ahead with this. So they're not doing the stage because they haven't got as many sponsors as they normally have, and they've had lots of people rally around to be involved in the organisation of it because normally she does it all on her own. Apart from the entertainment, I deal with that. And so I was asked if I would do it again. And so I've just been trying to put a schedule together, because we've got four bands that are coming and each of them have their own requirements. They each have their availability at different times throughout the day. So I've got to make sure that not only do I find a time slot for them that suits them, but also a time slot that allows them to be there for a sound check, because it takes a while to set up and do sound checks and so forth. So that's been a big part of my week. And I've also been doing lots of publicity for shows, Christmas shows in particular. And one of the ones that is really important to me is the pantomime that I'm directing, and I've written and I'm in. And the flyers and the posters arrived in the post this week, and I've got them here. So I thought I would show you. Here we go. "Goldilocks and the Three Bears - the Greatest Show on Earth." Which is a play on the fact that it's based around circuses, and the circus is known as 'the Greatest Show on Earth.' So we have flyers, these arrived and they look very, very nice. I like these. Box office opens on the 25th. I'm going to give some of these out during the Sanderstead Community Day, so the box office will be open for that. And if you didn't manage to see the flyer because it's quite small, I've got posters as well, which are A4 posters. So if you're in the local area and you have someone, somewhere where there is people who you know, you have footfall; maybe a shop window or your house overlooks a main road and you would be prepared to put one of these up in your window, then please let me know and I will make sure we get one of these round to you. And because the printers don't charge any extra for printing on the back, well I've got the same on the back. Which seems a bit odd: why would you put the same poster on both sides? However, if you think about a shop window, put this in the shop window; it's great for people looking into the shop, not so great for people who are in the shop. So having it double-sided when it doesn't cost any extra, means that you get twice the amount of coverage. It can go anywhere really. And if it does go on a wall, then one side's not going to be seen, just as it would be normally. So there's no downside to having it double-sided. This is something I've been doing for a little while now. I used to have a different poster on the back, so that we could put it up and use it as this side, or we could put it up, use it for this side. But we didn't have anything this year, so I just printed the same thing on both sides. And, there you go little tip for you, if you're going to get posters done, this is actually quite, this is I think it's 250 or 300 gram, so it's reasonably thick. I can get these laminated, in fact I might do some lamination so we can put some up outside. And these are 170 gram, which is just about half, just over half, which is about right for flyers. So I've been designing those, finishing off the design, getting them printed. It's been busy week.
